About Us:

Digital Green began as a research project at Microsoft in 2006 and spun-off into an independent not-for-profit in 2008.  Digital Green now engages more than 2 million smallholder farmers through its 110-person team located across offices in North America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia; has an annual budget of $11m; and receives support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, Google and others and collaborates closely with host country governments, civil society organizations, commercial agribusiness, and farmers themselves.

Role Summary:

Digital Green (digitalgreen.org) is looking to expand its board of directors with individuals who would be excited to share its mission to empower smallholder farmers to lift themselves out of poverty with the power of technology and grassroots-level partnerships.  Board members serve as trusted advisors to Digital Green's executive director and global leadership team and guide the organization's overall governance and strategy.
 

We're looking for individuals who have experience scaling international development organizations and have the wisdom to know what works (and what doesn't) when it comes to financial management, legal compliance, and organizational growth.  We'd especially value individuals who have worked with agricultural enterprises from the ground up, particularly from the continent of Africa, who can contribute to Digital Green's aim in making a lasting impact in the lives of rural communities globally.

Digital Green's board members are instrumental in providing us with the guidance and direction we need to continue to move our mission forward and build a thriving organization. As a part of the governing body of Digital Green, the board of directors fulfills a variety of roles and responsibilities:

1. Determine mission and purpose. It is the board's responsibility to create and review a statement of mission and purpose that articulates Digital Green’s goals, means, and primary constituents served.
2. Support and evaluate the chief executive. The board should ensure that the chief executive has the professional support he or she needs to further the goals of the organization.
3. Ensure effective planning. Board members must actively participate in an overall planning process and assist in implementing and monitoring the plan's goals.
4. Monitor, and strengthen programs and services. The board's responsibility is to determine which programs are consistent with the organization's mission and monitor their effectiveness.
5. Ensure adequate financial resources. One of the board's foremost responsibilities is to secure adequate resources for the organization to fulfill its mission.
6. Protect assets and provide proper financial oversight. The board must assist in developing the annual budget and ensuring that proper financial controls are in place.
7. Build a competent board. All board members have a responsibility to articulate prerequisites for candidates, orient new members, and periodically and comprehensively evaluate their own performance.
8. Ensure legal and ethical integrity. The board is ultimately responsible for adherence to legal standards and ethical norms.
9. Enhance the Digital Green’s public standing. The board should clearly articulate the organization's mission, accomplishments, and goals to the public and garner support from the community.

The board of directors will meet on need basis but at least once every six months and will communicate via email on urgent business.
